Shortly after the birth of my son who is now 18 months old, I became more concerned about exposing my family to harsh chemicals including those in household cleaners.

After doing a little research, I decided to try out some non-toxic homemade cleaners. I was pleasantly surprised on how well they worked. As an added bonus, homemade cleaning formulas cost about one-tenth the price of their commercial counterpart.

Making your own non-toxic cleaning formulas will take you no time at all with these simple, straightforward recipes. Try them out, and let me know how they work for you!

Scrubbing cleanser

For bathtubs and sinks, shower doors, tile, or stubborn stains on pots and pans.

Is there anything baking soda can’t do? Try this formula for large areas. For smaller spaces, just sprinkle baking soda directly onto a wet sponge and gently scrub away grime.

½ cup baking soda
Liquid soap

In a small bowl, slowly add the liquid soap to the baking soda, a tablespoon at a time, stirring with a plastic spoon, until the consistency reaches that of a spreadable frosting. Spoon the cream onto a damp sponge, wash the surface, and rinse well. Note that rinsing may take a few minutes.

Floor cleanser

For tile, linoleum, wood flooring; and inside shower doors.

This formula removes dirt and dissolves stubborn, gummy stains. The smell of vinegar dissipates after a couple of hours; you can substitute lemon juice for the vinegar, but any unused cleaner will not last more than a day.

¼ cup liquid soap
½ cup white distilled vinegar or lemon juice
2 gallons warm water

Combine the ingredients in a large plastic bucket. Use with a mop or sponge, and clean as normal. There’s no need to rinse.

Oven cleaner

For removing grease and caked-on residue inside the oven.

Store-bought oven cleaner is one of the most hazardous household cleansers on the market. This substitute takes a bit more work, but the results are blissfully nontoxic and effective.

One small box baking soda
Water

Sprinkle the bottom of the oven with baking soda to cover. Spray with water until very damp, and keep moist by spraying every few hours. Let set overnight. In the morning, simply scoop out the baking soda and all of the oven grime that attached itself to it. To clean the sides of the oven, make a paste of baking soda and water and smear on with a damp sponge. It’s important to completely rinse the oven with water after this treatment; this may take a few minutes.

For those who strive to be eco-friendly, pregnancy can add extra challenges to your life. Pregnancy is a crucial time in your baby’s health and well being. Eating organic food as much as possible will eliminate many harmful chemicals from entering your system as well as ensuring that you are doing what you can to help the environment. The following article will discuss ways to be eco-friendly while you are pregnant.

Instructions

Step 1: Eat organic foods. Organic foods are pesticide, hormone, antibiotic, and nitrate free. These are all things that you want to avoid as much as possible during your pregnancy.

Step 2: Avoid mercury. Do not eat fish that is high in mercury. Mercury can cause myriad problems for your unborn baby or infant.

Step 3: Use organic beauty products. These can include makeup, shampoo, soaps, lotions, and face creams. Try to find green beauty products at your local natural food store.

Tips & Warnings

* Buy organic cotton products for your baby. Conventional cotton production uses huge amounts of pesticides and insecticides.

* High-mercury fish includes king mackerel, orange roughy, shark, swordfish, marline, tilefish and tuna steak.

* Eating all organic foods can be very expensive. To be cost effective, buy organic versions of the food that you eat the most. Also, try to buy organic produce as much as possible since fruits and veggies have the highest exposure to pesticides and chemicals.

* Many common makeup brands contain a chemical called phthalates. This chemical has been linked to birth defects.

* Do not use pesticides or insecticides in, or around, your home while you are pregnant.

Ever wonder what to do with those colorful little paper valentines every third-grader brings home after the class Valentine’s Day party?  Here are a few ideas for putting them to good (re)use…

• Placemats made with contact paper, used valentines, wrapping paper, or ribbon scraps, and anything else that suits a flat work of art make a lovely gift or memento of the day gone past.  Visit Kaboose for easy-to-follow instructions.  This project is great for kids of all ages, with a little help from an adult.  Careful patterns or haphazard scatters of color and design work equally well when creating these recycled placemats for youngsters.

• Bookmarks are also easy to construct using these little valentines.  Have several young friends join together to make a whole collection of festive bookmarks and donate them to the local public library or to a nearby school as a belated Valentine’s Day present.  Handmade, kid-crafted design and artwork make these playful place-holders a real delight.
- How-To:  Simply cut cards to size and glue pieces to assorted bookmark-shaped pieces of cardboard cut from cereal boxes or other household paper products.  Laminate them or cover with contact paper to ensure long-term usefulness.  Any length or thickness will work.

• Postcards.  Hunt around the house for large index cards to cut to postmaster-friendly postcard size (minimum of 5 inches by 3.5 inches, maximum of 6 inches by 4.25 inches).  Glue or tape valentines to one side or create a collage with lots of different paper bits, and then send this thoughtful postcard to a loved one.  Who says valentines are just for the month of February?
